Art worth a second look

The first weekend of October will be extra busy for the Woodend Lions Club, with two big events planned for the community.

On Saturday, October 4, the club will host the monthly Woodend Lions Community Market from 9am to 1pm, coinciding with the Woodend Community Farmers Market.

On Sunday, October 5, the club will then host a Second Chance Art Sale.

The sale is an opportunity for the community to donate unloved artworks on the Saturday, which will then go on sale on Sunday.

Woodend Lions Club president Barry McDonald said it’s a great opportunity to breathe new life into art pieces that may have been forgotten.

“About four years ago, we had been doing the art show that we have in March … people had been saying pretty regularly ‘we can’t buy anymore because our walls are full’,” he said.

“An obvious conclusion was to let us sell some of the older stuff you have, for charity, and raise money for our projects, and it’ll free up some space for you to buy some more art.

“This became reasonably popular, and it (follows) the recycle reuse philosophy that says you may have stopped seeing the art on your wall, but it’ll be useful for someone.”

Donors can drop off paintings, prints, drawings, photos, or posters, framed or not, on Saturday, October 4 from 2pm to 5pm at St Ambrose Hall, Woodend.

Be sure to come on Sunday from 10am to 4pm at the hall to purchase a new piece of art for your home, and support the Woodend Lions Club’s many community causes and a local charity.

Left over art from the sale will be donated to local schools.
