Salesian College Sunbury students are using their flower powers to bring joy to the community.
Earlier this year, the college’s year 9 retreat students set up a micro flower farm as part of their curriculum.
Now, the flowers are ready to harvest and the students will distribute the flowers among the Sunbury community.
College principal Mark Brockhus said the flower farm was used as a teaching tool and to contribute positively in a dire time.
“During this pandemic, our college thought it would be a good time to share some happiness in our community,“ he said.
“There is something about flowers that simply make people feel good and associate them to positivity.
“We know the impact of coronavirus has had an effect on some people’s mental health and … our students just want to keep connected through a simple gesture of kindness.“
Mr Brockhus said remote learning didn’t stop the project from going ahead, with students and teachers becoming more innovative in their approaches.
“The project has involved teaching our students about different horticultural methods, demonstrating growth, harvesting and then learning how to arrange them,“ he said.
