Five people were treated by paramedics and one taken to hospital after an incident at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre last Tuesday afternoon.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics were called to the Mollison Street centre just after 5pm where they assessed five people. She confirmed one person was taken to hospital.

A statement released by the Department of Justice and Community Safety said staff at the centre responded swiftly.

“Youth justice staff responded to an incident at Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre yesterday afternoon,” the statement read.

“Emergency response procedures were immediately enacted, and the incident was successfully contained by staff.

“Five staff and one young person were assessed for minor injuries, with one of those staff members requiring further assessment in hospital. That staff member has now returned home.

“Staff are to be commended for their swift and professional response.

“The incident will be reviewed by the Department of Justice and Community Safety, and referrals made to Victoria Police for investigation.”

The incident comes after it was announced the Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct will be inspected by a team led by Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass during March and April.

The inspection will focus on practices relating to solitary confinement of children and young people.
