Macedon Ranges council is encouraging residents to take part in the Plastic Free July challenge, recognised all over the world as a month of action to reduce plastic waste.
During this month, individuals, businesses and governments work together to fix society’s [plastic foot print to create social change.
In a statement, council said by sharing ideas, positive activities and stories of change, Plastic Free July helps everyone to ‘choose to refuse’ single-use plastics.
Mayor Jennifer Anderson said she’d be taking part by attempting to reduce her single-use soft plastic down to 200-grams a month.
“Single-use plastic causes such a huge negative impact on our planet,” councillor Anderson said.
“I will monitor my usage throughout July, try to get what I’m using right down and look to continue my practices into the future.
“Every little bit counts, so please get involved in whatever way you can.”
According to council, an estimated 140 million people worldwide were a part of Plastic Free July in 2021.
“On average, participants reduced household waste and recycling by 15kg per person,” council said.
“People can begin to reduce their waste by simply choosing to refuse the top 4 single-use plastics: straws, take-away coffee cups, plastic shopping and produce bags, and plastic water bottles.
