Budding baristas can learn the basics of a good brew from the maestros at a new course in Woodend.

Remy Shpayzer, new owner of Fox in the Chamber cafe, has partnered with Woodend Neighbourhood House to offer professional barista training.

The course targets 15 to 25 year olds, and will run over three weeks on Thursdays during coming months.

Woodend Neighbourhood House co-ordinator Angela Van Dam says the course is affordable, and its skill set much sought-after.

“We’re excited Remy approached us to share his vast experience, both as a barista and as a teacher,” she says.

“We’re also thrilled to have received funding through the LET’s program run by Kyneton Community and Learning Centre, so we can offer six hours of very affordable training.”

There will be three intakes in September, October and November, but there are limited places available.

“Session one will cover the basics, good technique, and what makes the difference between a good coffee and a bad one,” Ms Van Dam says.

“Session two steps things up and helps you refine your skills, gain an insight into the world of coffee and the importance of coffee culture.

“Session three gets you work ready – learn the slick barista workflow, cleanliness and speed, to keep those customers happy.”

An information session will be held this Friday (August 26) at 4.15pm at Woodend.
