40 years ago

July 21, 1976

Mr B. Fabretto estate agent and candidate for Central Riding in the coming council elections urges local residents to stand up and fight for their rights against the action of the Board of Works in announcing intention to curtail development west of Werribee River. The Board’s moves were first reported in a story in The Age on July 7.

 

30 years ago

July 23, 1986

The heralded $6 million Forsyth Road overpass is in financial jeopardy, and another four major road projects in Werribee could grind to an abrupt halt. That was the message this week from Shire President Pat Goodwin, and Shire Engineer John Nicol. Both fear that spending cutbacks in Canberra could end with the Federal axe savaging road projects which will be vital to Werribee’s transport systems and economy.

July 17, 1996

A huge golf club resort and housing development will be built on the former Cheetham Saltworks site in Point Cook. The Sanctuary Lakes resort, valued at $800 million, is said to be the biggest residential development in Melbourne. It is expected to provide hundreds of jobs for Wyndham residents and inject millions of dollars into the economy.

What started out as a holiday to attend a wedding has become a nightmare for the relatives of a Werribee family as they find themselves stranded in the war zone of Lebanon. As Israel began its offensive against its northern neighbour last Thursday, many Lebanese Australians watched the news in horror – including Bassam Tofaili and his family.
