Kalkooma’s bush idyll: 34 Vinnicombes Road, Romsey, 3434

Kalkooma, a residence redolent with its own distinct character, has been described as a beach house in the bush.

That’s not because of nautical hints, but rather for the relaxed ambience, almost-rustic touches and the lavish use of glass to maximise enjoyment of outdoor beauty generated by almost 13 hectares of land.

Most windows are full height, ceilings are mostly angled and a unique painted timber structure, almost with a barn feel, transverses the differing ceiling heights in one of two distinct living rooms.

This is an interesting house.

Begin the journey through by hanging your hat in the mudroom/hall, before heading straight ahead to a rumpus room or turning left to a bedroom with en suite. Or head upstairs, where life with uplifting vistas beckons.

The light-filled staircase rises to a hallway, along which are kitchen and dining room entry, three of five bedrooms in total, the bathroom and laundry.

The fitted main bedroom among them has an en suite and another bedroom is off the dining room.

The lounge room (with that transversal beam) has polished floorboards, a brick fireplace and full-height french doors to a great deck, elevated and spacious.

Behind double doors, the neighbouring carpeted dining zone also opens to the deck and is blessed with streams of northerly light from banks of windows.

The galley kitchen, with a full-length brekkie bench – able to seat at least six on the dining side – has a gas cooker and seamless cabinetry in a soft-olive laminate.

Two dams and a large shed are on the property, as are a double carport and a fully lined storage room that accesses rumpus room and an undercover patio.

A long curving driveway, bordered with tamed bush, leads to lawn areas surrounding the house. Shady trees invite pulling up a pew, while birdcall and bush sounds enhance the sense of peace.

A five-minute drive from Romsey’s centre, Kalkooma is offered as a walk-in, walk-out and comes with furniture and furnishings, white goods and plant and equipment.

Ready-made weekender anyone?
