Beautiful hideaway: 42 Alton Road, Mount Macedon, 3441

If you had to choose a place that embodies the very best of the 1980s build style, it could easily be this one. Designed by Freda of Simon and Freda Thornton Architects and built in 1985 on a beautiful 2.09-hectare site, the house is still stunning today.

Constructed of Daniel Robertson bricks and cedar, the house is replete with aspects of startling beauty but the star takes a seat at the back – a conservatory, with double-glazed panels of seamless glass rising to and angling above the second level. From both internal and external perspectives, this is a “special” in the box of tricks the architect has drawn from throughout.

Lavish use of cedar and jarrah, exposed brickwork, towering multi-angled ceilings, picture windows – from double-height to small and well-sited – and timeless ebony slate create a perfect marriage with space and light.

The sense of being hugged by nature is ever-present, with every window a vignette of the gorgeous gardens which, by the way, offer a gorgeous swimming pool. This is formed in such a way that it looks totally as if bestowed by nature: simply lovely.

Entry is to the large living hub where the architectural story is dramatically on display. Look up and there’s a mezzanine floor, and ceilings that dip and soar; look across and the kitchen, with Gaggenau appliances, is there; and look anywhere to take in the impeccability of design.

A laundry/mudroom and toilet occupy other ground floor space.

The mezzanine level, with jarrah floorboards all through, includes a large living room with access to an elevated deck. As well, there’s a bedroom/study, and the main bedroom with walk-in robe and an en suite with marble tiling and Grohe fittings.

Another pair of bedrooms, each with outdoor access, are on the upper level, as is the dual-basin main bathroom appointed to match the en suite.

The property is within a 10-minute saunter of the village’s pub and good coffee.
