Monique Stevens joins Sunbury Jets

Sunbury Jets have announced the latest piece of the puzzle ahead of their Big V division 1 season with the signing of Monique Stevens.

Stevens, originally from Albury‐Wodonga, has joined the Jets after two years in Queensland, where her form with Bundaberg Bears in the Queensland Basketball League saw her rewarded with a development squad spot with WNBL side SEQ Stars.

While Stevens didn’t get any court time, she had the opportunity to train with Australian players Rachel Jarry and Rebecca Allen in a side which has made finals in its inaugural year.

Before playing in Queensland, Stevens spent time as the starting point guard at Northwest Missouri University in America and six years for the Lady Bandits in the SEABL.

Her coaches at the Lady Bandits included Jets head coach Kennedy Kereama and Jets’ assistant coach Lisa Townsend.

Kereama said Stevens would fill the key starting point guard position.

“Signing a point guard of quality was an absolute must this season and I believe Monique fits the bill perfectly,” he said.

“I know her game and have worked with her before. She has a great work ethic and is tenacious in defence.

“Monique is a pass‐first point guard, with a good all around game and is always ready for any assignment.”

Stevens said playing in Sunbury seemed like the right fit for her.

“Weighing up my options Sunbury feels like the right fit; coach, team and club aspects were all very appealing,” she said.

“ It’s not about playing in the best league it’s about finding a team that collectively has the same goals and ambitions and after speaking with Ken, I feel we’re on the same page.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Ken and Lisa again after many years away at college and playing in the QBL.

“I have the upmost respect for Ken and feel he can take my game to the next level.”
