Prez pays the bill as bowlers clean up

For a third successive week, Sunbury Bowling Club has claimed five wins from five matches in Bowls Victoria Saturday pennants.

A clean sweep – a win for all the club’s five teams – is a rare occurrence, but Sunbury has done it four times this season.

“The club president said at the start of the season there would be free drinks on the bar if we could get five wins on one day,” Sunbury player Dave Glennon said on Sunday. “Three weeks in a row breaks his heart … we had more than 150 people at the club last night.”

Sunbury’s top side is leading the way in division 2, section 2 and had already sealed a home final even before Saturday’s 78 (16)-59 (2) win over Buckley Park.

Brad Janner’s rink won 21-12, Mark Cowan’s rink 23-13, Brad Willoughby won 22-14 and Deeon Dean, deputising for Elise Cowan, lost 20-12.

Cowan, who played her 100th game for Victoria during the week, is expected to return this week.

Sunbury’s second side, now fourth on the division 3, section 2 ladder, has included Australian representative Carla Krizanic as a skip for the past two matches. “Carla isn’t going to be playing finals so we want to try to keep the same side in the top team ahead of finals,” Glennon said. “Obviously if she was playing finals she would be in our number one team.”

The club’s third side (division 5, section 1) and number five side (division 8, section 2) will host home finals after securing top-two finishes.

Its division 5, section 2 team sits seventh on the ladder after five consecutive wins.

Meanwhile, the Central Highlands Bowls Division finals kicked off in division 2 and division 3 on Saturday.

Gisborne won through to the grand final of division 2 with a 101 (14)-92 (4) win over Bacchus Marsh.

In the preliminary final, Bacchus Marsh will play Trentham, which beat Kyneton 95 (14)-86 (4) on Saturday.

In division 3, Romsey sneaked into the grand final with a three-shot victory over Gisborne Red, 65 (13)-62 (2).

Gisborne Red will play Lancefield in the preliminary final after Lancefield beat Bacchus Marsh 66 (12)-58 (4).

Division 1 finals start this week, with Gisborne playing Kyneton Golf Gold at Trentham and Lancefield against Bacchus Marsh at Kyneton Golf.
