Sunbury back after shock loss

Sunbury returned to the winners’ list in Bowls Victoria division 2, section 2 on Saturday.

After a shock loss the week before, Sunbury was made to work for this one against Lalor (2), winning 80 (14)-78 (4).

Brad Janner’s rink lost 26-15, Deeon Dean’s rink won 20-16, Mark Cowan’s lost 21-16, while Brad Willoughby, who returned this week, won 29-15.

Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said Willoughby, who played only one round last season, is set to be available for the rest of this year.

“He hasn’t played much the past couple of years due to work, but it looks like he’ll play more this season,” Glennon said.

“His rink of Mark Clohesy, Sharon Whana and Damien Ely had a perfect eight during their match and it proved to be the difference on the day.”

The win keeps Sunbury on top of the ladder ahead of its clash with Craigieburn. All five Sunbury teams recorded victories, with the second team moving into the top four halfway through the season.

Glennon says selectors will have a hard task this week with the return of regular skippers Carla Odgers and Elise Cowan.

“Normally, we find it difficult this time of year with people not available.

“Only Deeon won’t be available this round so we have a headache the other way working out who will be skips in the top division.”
