Still time to sign up for Sunbury Relay for Life

Organisers of Sunbury’s Relay for Life are asking anyone whose life has been touched by cancer to sign up for this weekend’s charity event.

Chairwoman Shara Turner says registrations will be taken at Boardman Reserve on Saturday ahead of the overnight relay, which raises money for Cancer Council Victoria.

‘‘We’ve got 80 to 100 people already registered, but we’re expecting quite a few more will register on the day,’’ Ms Turner says.

This year’s event will include children’s entertainment and a candlelight ceremony to commemorate loved ones lost.

Live music from acts including Sunbury classic rockers Roadhouse will add to the colour of the event.

More than 300 people took to the town’s Little Athletics track last year, raising $52,000 to help Cancer Council Victoria conduct research and provide support services for people affected by the disease.

Ms Turner, whose father died of esophageal cancer last year, says it’s rare to meet a person who hasn’t loved someone affected by the disease.

‘‘Unfortunately, it’s one of those diseases you can’t get away from,’’ Ms Turner says. ‘‘Everyone knows someone who’s had it .’’
