Perfect start to season for Lancefield

Lancefield has made the perfect start to the Central Highlands Bowls division 1 season with three wins from as many matches.

The latest victory was 96 (16)-72 (2) against Kyneton on Saturday, with all four rinks being one-sided.

Lancefield’s Peter Linehan, Mark Godbolt and Garry Templar all got home by more than 10 shots, while teammate Michael Linehan lost his rink by 14.

Lancefield secretary Gordon Charles said the club’s start was gratifying.

“The division 1 side seems to be working well together,” Charles said before the weekend match. “The recruits have really fitted in.”

The club added four new players to the top side to replace three who have moved away to warmer weather.

“Three of the four recruits, Bev and Jeff Holmes, and Barry Atkins, came from Romsey,” Charles said. “They are Lancefield people and have fitted in really well. The president’s wife, Leanne Dickenson, has also joined the team.”

The club’s second team, which plays in division 3, suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday.

Charles said finals was the aim for both its Saturday teams and its Tuesday pennant sides. “Last year our division 1 side was knocked out in the preliminary final, while the division 3s lost the grand final,” he said.

“One more game improvement from both sides would be fantastic.”

Seven Lancefield players have been rewarded for their starts to the season and have been named in the competition’s Millar-Deason challenge teams.

Lancefield has the most representatives in the teams – Barry and Mark Godbolt, Jeff and Bev Holmes, Aaron Young, Templar and Wayne Turner – while Michael Linehan has been named as an emergency.

This week, Lancefield plays Kyneton Golf Gold, “the yardstick of the competition again”, according to Charles. Gisborne is the only other unbeaten side after rolling Kyneton Golf Gold and now sits on top of the ladder, two points clear of Lancefield.

In a dominant display against the reigning premiers, Gisborne won 102 (16)-87 (2).

In other matches, Romsey defeated Kyneton Golf Blue 98 (15)-79 (3), while Bacchus Marsh was too good for Woodend, 119 (16)-74 (2).

Gisborne, Kyneton and Trentham were among the winners in division 2 and Bacchus Marsh, Kyneton Blue, Romsey and Gisborne Red won in division 3.
