Cats pounce on Dogs trio

Macedon hasn’t wasted anytime adding to its list for next year’s Riddell District Football League season.

Having added several players this year, including Shaun Harrison who was runner-up in the league best and fairest award, the Cats have now added Gisborne trio Casey Summerfield, Tom Waters and Matthew Knox.

Cats coach Jeff Andrews said the three would be handy inclusions for the side which was knocked out in the first week of the finals.

“We targeted these guys and that will be likely be it for us with the recruiting,” Andrews said.

“Casey is a Macedon junior and all three are good friends. We knew they wanted to leave Gisborne so we had a chat.

“They are good local football players.”

Andrews said the three would bring experience and bigger bodies to the side.

Summerfield was captain of Gisborne, while Waters was the dominant ruckman of the Bendigo Football League which saw him represent Vic Country in the AFL Victoria Community Cup.

Knox, who returned to playing football full time with the Bulldogs, led their goal kicking.

“Watching the sides in the finals they had bigger bodies and that experience,” Andrews said.

“We went from uncompetitive to competitive. Being competitive was a good start, now we have to take the next step.”

The recruitment of Knox will be vital to the Cats forward line, with Marcus Kenny’s future up in the air.

“Towards the end of the year we were a little light on goals,” Andrews said.

“He [Kenny] had knee surgery late in the year and we aren’t sure how it will come up and whether he can play.

“If he plays he will be with us and not going elsewhere.”

Andrews said most of this year’s squad will return.

“James Ferry, who was on our list but didn’t play much due to VFL commitments, is being looked at by Essendon to be drafted or rookie listed.

“We may have a couple of players retire.”
