Relief centre in Gisborne for fire evacuees

A relief centre has been opened in Gisborne for people displaced by an out of control bushfire that is threatening properties to the north of Lancefield.

Macedon Ranges council deputy mayor Russell Mowatt said temporary shelter was available at the Gisborne Community Centre in Hamilton Street for residents of Lancefield, Cobaw, Benloch, Nulla Vale, Goldie and Goldie North who have left the area due to the 600 hectare blaze which is now heading towards Benloch.

Basic support services such as food, blankets and first aid are also available.

Cr Mowatt urged residents to keep up to date with fire warnings being issued by the CFA.

“If you are leaving or travelling near a fire-affected area to attend a relief centre, make sure that it is safe to do so and plan your route carefully,” he said.

“Right now there is an emergency unfolding in our region so I would encourage everyone to work together as a community and help each other through this.”

Pets and animals are welcome at relief centres as long as they are contained.

People should bring items necessary for their health and wellbeing, such as medication.

Cr Mowatt said residents leaving their homes should stay with family and friends whereever possible.

The fire is currently impacting houses on Ashworths Road, Musk Gully Road, Whalans Track and Greenways Road, with embers up to 2.5km ahead of the front.

Residents accessing property from Burke & Wills Track between Lancefield-Tooboorac Road and Baynton Road are advised to seek shelter.

A wind change is currently causing the fire to head easterly and north-easterly towards Benloch and Nullavale.

Extensive road closures are in place.

Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley has confirmed the fire was sparked by a planned burn in the Cobaw ranges which was controlled by firefighters on Saturday. He said Tuesday’s extreme conditions led to the fire flaring up.

The next CFA advice is expected at 6pm.
