Fight for finals spots continues

The fight for finals spots in the Riddell District Football League will go down to the wire.

Only percentage separates Broadford and the Sunbury Kangaroos going into the final round in the fight for the sixth and last spot in the finals.

Both sides had convincing wins on Saturday against Kilmore and Rockbank respectively, but Broadford’s 93 point win over the Blues meant they jumped ahead of the Kangaroos.

The Kangaroos who ended a five game losing streak defeated Rockbank by 53 points.

The battle for top spot isn’t over either with four teams still in the mix for the minor premiership.

Rupertswood’s victory over Romsey saw the Redbacks slip from first to fourth, with Riddell now a game clear on top of the ladder.

The Sharks, Redbacks and Diggers Rest, who smashed Melton Centrals, are all equal on points a game behind the Bombers.

A win to the Bombers over the Sunbury Kangaroos in the final round is enough to secure top spot.

In other matches, Woodend-Hesket recorded its sixth win of the season and Macedon was way too strong for Lancefield on its way to securing fifth spot.

It was a good day all round for the Sunbury Lions.

The women’s side won through to the Victorian Women’s Football League west division grand final with a 71- 31 win over Melton Centrals.

It was only earlier this year the Lions looked liked folding due to lack of numbers on and off the field.

The men’s side only needs a win against Melton in the final round of the Ballarat Football League season to keep its finals run alive.

The Lions 13.15 (93) – 8.3 (51)  victory over Sebastopol and Bacchus Marsh’s shock loss to Ballarat means the Lions sit in sixth spot percentage ahead of the Cobras.

Kyneton’s finals drought looks set to be over after the Tigers 19.12 (126) – 12.13 (85) win over Castlemaine in the Bendigo Football League.

The Tigers sit two games clear in fifth spot and only need to win one of its remaining two matches to play finals for the first time since 2003.

Meanwhile, East Sunbury finished its season on a winning note with a comprehensive win over Burnside Heights in Essendon District Football League division 2.

The Thunder jumped out of the blocks with eight goals to two on the way to a 25.13 (163) – 6.4 (40).

The wins means the Thunder finishes the season with four wins for the year in sixth spot.
