Sunbury Kangaroos Chris Meacham and Lucas Dowson are recovering from injuries after pushing their children out of the way of a runaway ute on a Wallan farm.
Sunbury Kangaroos Football Netball Club president Alan Walters said both men were seriously injured and are still in hospital after the incident on May 3.
He said the pair would likely be off work for a number of months.
“They were collecting firewood when the hand brake on the car let go,” Walters said. “There were three children in the way of the car … Chris and Lucas went to push them out of the way.
“They hit heads and got the brunt of the car. Chris is fine and Lucas is on his way to recovery.”
One of the children received slight bruising and cuts.
Meacham didn’t coach the senior side at the weekend. Jamie Cuffe lead the team, which lost to Riddell by 62 points.
“Chris won’t coach this week and we have the bye next week and interleague the week after,” Walters said.
“Hopefully, he is right for after that, but it’s his decision. His health is more important.”
Walters said the club would hold a fund-raiser in coming weeks to help the families of both men.
