Riddell and Sunbury Kangaroos lead the way with eight players from each team selected in the Riddell District Football League senior interleague side to take on Alberton at Romsey Park in the 2014 WorkSafe country championships on May 24.

The squad of 51, which will have three training sessions before the final team is selected, has representatives from every team.

Defending premiers Riddell have Daniel Sahlberg, Ethan Foreman, Hadyn Ross, James Nolan, Matthew Darby, Matthew Sammut, Pat Cariss and Paul Sahlberg in the squad, with Kangaroos represented by Matthew Welsh, Tierone Cuffe, Brenton Sutherland, Daniel Gregory, Dylan Murphy, Kane Murphy, Jake Powell and Mitchell Strieff.

Rupertswood’s seven squad members are Brent Swallow, Brett Chambers, John Corso, Leigh Brennan, Mitchell Gaunt, Niall McGovern and Todd Podolczak.

The league’s best full-forward, Matthew Davidson, leads the six players chosen from the Redbacks. He’s joined by teammates Angus Storey, Ayden Tessari, Brad Mitchell, Chris Petroro and Dermott Smythe.

Others in the squad include Rockbank’s James Armistead, Jamie Zerafa, Jordan Bagumgartner and Leigh Sobotnicki; Diggers Rest’s James Breen, John Ryan, Matthew Krul and Stuart Clarke; Melton Centrals’ Andrew Lorimer, James Aquilina and Nathan Richardson; Woodend Hesket duo James Hepburn and Jesse Sheppard; and Macedon’s James Wright and Josh Clough.”

RDFNL senior interleague coach Matt Power said: “We’re really pleased with the squad we’ve been able to put together after four rounds of local football.

“We feel like we’ve been able to put together a squad of committed players who are looking forward to the challenge of what will
be a tough game against a strong Alberton FL.”

The Alberton League comprises teams from South Gippsland.
