RDFNL: Romsey goalers stand tall

By Tara Murray

Romsey’s A-grade netballers bounced back from a surprise loss to beat Woodend-Hesket convincingly in the Riddell District Football Netball League on Sunday.

In cold conditions at Gilbert Gordon Oval, the Redbacks were in control from the outset, winning by 58 goals, 81-23.

Redbacks coach Danni Davidson said it was good to get back on the winners’ list.

“We came out strong and the win was what we needed,” she said.

“Last week was a shock and made us remember you have to play your best netball if you’re going to win.”

Davidson said the team worked hard on its structures before facing the Hawks.

“The girls fought hard and we were in the position to change things around.

“Bronwyn Blair [who has been playing in defence] has played goals with Hope [Hamilton] for a long time, so it was good to get her back in there.

“It means if we have to change it up
come finals, she has had some shooting during the year.

“Rachel Scully [who has been playing defence] is ultimately a goaler, but she will play anywhere on the court.”

Hawks coach Louise Kelly said Romsey exploited its height advantage.

“The defenders are a bit short; we have to teach them to jump.

“We had a few players injured and sick, which didn’t help.

“The girls played well, but [Romsey’s] height made it hard.”

Kelly said that after a slow start to the season, and a battle with player numbers, the team was starting to bond.

“We have a great number of girls at
training now; we even have a couple too many,” she said.

“The structures I’m trying to put in have taken time to implement.

“They are playing heaps better and there’s a lot of positives.”
