Sunbury Lions were given a reality check against East Point in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday.

After winning their first two games, the Lions were on the end of a performance from East Point that was almost of dry-ground quality. The result was a win by 51-points:
17.9 (111) to 8.12 (60).

Lions coach Rick Horwood said his players hadn’t come to play.

“I think they left our form halfway up the freeway. We only played five minutes in the first quarter and were made to pay for it. We couldn’t get the ball and were second to the play. It was very disappointing, especially the mental approach.”

He said the side had its chances to get back into the game in the third term but was wasteful in front of goal.

“In the third term we had a lot of the play and I thought we showed some good effort.

“We had the first four shots at goal and kicked 1.3 and they got it forward and kicked a goal.

“We had 17 inside 50s and kicked 1.8 for the term and they had six entries into their forward line and kicked 3.1.

Horwood highlighted the effiency of East Point in front of goal. “At one point they were 16.4, which is brilliant in the weather we played in. If you look at all the other scores in what was a low-scoring round, it makes East Point’s performance even better.

Under-18 player Jesse Flannery was the best for the team, with David Kovacavic and Dwain Sanderson also playing well.

Horwood said he would discuss with the players their mental approach to the game during the week. This week the Lions face Redan at Clarke Oval.
