WVFL

Sunbury Lions women’s football team was thrashed by Seaford at Clarke Oval on Sunday in its Victorian Women’s Football League division 2 opener. The Lions were held scoreless in the first quarter as Seaford landed eight scoring shots and opened up a 33-point lead. The Tigers continued to dominate and extended the lead in every quarter to take the points 16.8 (104) to 2.2 (14). Brooke Surgeon and Lisa Kirby kicked the goals for the Lions, with Bianca Zeinstra best for the team. This week, they face Mordialloc away.

EDFL

East Sunbury suffered a 90-point loss to East Keilor in Essendon District Football League division 2 – 14.15 (99) to 1.3 (9) – at Goonawarra Reserve on Saturday. The Thunder kicked the only goal of the first quarter to take a three-point lead into quarter time, with East Keilor failing to capitalise on its scoring chances. The joy for the Thunder was short-lived, as it remained scoreless for the rest of the game. James Wakeling kicked the only goal for Thunder, with Lucas Shaw named best for the losing side. East Sunbury faces Moonee Valley this Saturday at Ormond Park.

MCDFL

Trentham got up over Maldon in a thriller in Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League on Sunday. The Saints led at every break and held off the fast-finishing Bombers to win 11.9 (75) to 10.10 (70). Mark Strickland kicked five goals for the Saints, with Kasey Williams best afield. This week the Saints play Royal Park at home.

TAC Cup

The Calder Cannons’ good start to the TAC Cup season has continued with a 50-point win against the Murray Bushrangers on Saturday. The Cannons kicked five goals in the first term at Highgate Reserve and kept the Bushrangers goalless to open an early 32-point lead. The Bushrangers were able to halt the Cannnons’ momentum in the second term, reducing the lead by three points. But the Cannons regained control in the second half to win 13.5 (83) to 4.9 (33). Peter Wright and Jayden Foster kicked three goals each for the winners. Best-on-ground Touk Miller was well supported by Foster and Nicholas O’Kearney.

Football

Bendigo and Ballarat football leagues have released interleague squad details ahead of the 2014 WorkSafe country championships on Saturday, May 24. Bendigo, which takes on Gippsland, has nine Gisborne and seven Kyneton players. Seven Sunbury players have been included in the Ballarat squad, which faces Goulburn Valley Football Netball League. Riddell District Football League is due to name its squad this week.

Reigning premiers the Sunbury Tigers got their season off to a flyer with an easy 52-22 win over Craigieburn in the opening of Victorian Rugby League first grade.
