A localised planning policy for the Macedon Ranges will be drawn up to preserve the shire’s unique character.
The new planning controls would feature strategies to ensure that special assets were preserved and enhanced. Macedon Ranges is one of four areas identified by the state government which play a significant environmental, recreational, tourism and agribusiness role in the state.
Other areas are the Yarra Ranges, Bellarine and Mornington peninsulas.
Mayor Roger Jukes said the shire’s proximity to Melbourne and its attractiveness meant it was coming under more pressure for growth and change.
Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau said the Macedon Ranges needed to be protected by the planning statements.
“Everyone must have a say. If we don’t say what we value, we’ll lose it.”
The council was granted $25,000 to undertake consultation and inform residents of the policy.
A survey available on the council’s website asks residents what they value about the natural and recreational features of the shire and how they could be managed for the benefit of the community in the future. A group of residents will be contacted by phone and will be asked to take part in a workshop.
After stage one of consultation is finished, a draft planning statement would be released for residents’ feedback in July. View details at mrsc.vic.gov.au/planning-statement
