Ranges councillor cleared of misconduct

A governance review by Macedon Ranges council has revealed no further action will be taken against Cr Dominic Bonanno after her was caught speeding and drink driving.

Cr Bonanno, who was mayor at the time, came to the attention of police on 31 October 2025, while driving the mayoral vehicle.

Police confirmed the councillor recorded an alleged blood alcohol reading of 0.087.

He said he was disqualified from driving for six months, and confirmed the mayoral vehicle was neither impounded or damaged during the incident.

“I appreciate that my family, fellow councillors, council staff and the community put their trust in me, which I have breached, of which I sincerely apologise,” Cr Bonanno said in a statement at the time.

“I can’t turn the clock back, but I will work each day to re-build this trust in me over the months and years ahead.”

Council confirmed in November it would be launching an internal review and considering appropriate next steps, with the results released during the 25 February council meeting.

The report stated the Local Government Inspectorate advised the matter does not meet the statutory threshold for serious or gross misconduct under the Local Government Act 2020 and no further action will be taken by the body.

Council determined no further action was required against the councillor and said the matter would now be finalised.

Council said its review addressed and considered policy compliance, with the report referencing the Councillor Code of Conduct, Vehicle Use Policy and Occupational Health and Safety Policy.

Process advice was also sought from the Principal Councillor Conduct Registrar.

Council said in considering the matter, it noted Cr Bonanno publicly acknowledged the conduct, apologised, has taken an extended period of unpaid leave, and that traffic matters are addressed through the court system as the appropriate channel.

Cr Bonanno is on extended unpaid leave for six months, and will return to council on Monday 25 May.
