Sunbury’s fight goes to parliament

Sunbury residents will head to parliament’s steps as they continue to fight against the proposed waste-to-energy facility in the town’s outskirts.

The facility, proposed at HiQ’s Sunbury Ecohub site on Sunbury Road, has been a big source of frustration for residents, with a group of locals banding together to fight the proposal.

In December, the No Sunbury Waste Incinerator’s petition to stop the project in Sunbury was tabled in parliament, and is due to be debated on Wednesday 18 February.

The group and other Sunbury locals will be heading to Spring Street to host a rally an hour before it is due to be debated.

The petition calls on the Legislative Council of Victoria to call on Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny to immediately halt any approval or progress towards building a waste incinerator in Sunbury, until the Economy and Infrastructure Committee’s inquiry into Waste to Energy is complete.

The petition gained 3264 signatures of residents concerned about the project, and gained support from Western Metropolitan MP David Ettershank.

HiQ said the application for the project will be submitted this year.

The rally will be held on parliament’s steps at 5pm on Wednesday 18 February, before the group will head inside to watch the debate at 6pm.
