Scouting new members

The 1st Sunbury Scouts are ready to welcome new members.

For the first time in 18 months, the club is accepting new youths aged 11 to 14 in the Scout section.

“We’ve had eight of our Scouts recently move up into the Venturer Section, which is fantastic to see, but it also means we’ve now got rare openings for new youth to step into the program,” group leader Tash Child said.

“Scouting gives young people real life skills — leadership, resilience, problem-solving — and they gain all that while having fun, camping, and working together.”

The Scouts are youth-led and adult-supported, meaning young people themselves decide what activities they want to do, with the adults helping make it happen.

Kids can participate in bush hikes, cycling, sailing, bouldering and even snorkelling sessions.

The club also just went on a four-day snow camp at Mt Baw Baw.

Ms Child said they are also looking for adult leaders to support the group, with opportunities from leadership to outdoor training available.

“Scouts is all about the youth — but adults can get just as much out of it. We’re looking for more volunteers to help us grow, and no prior experience is needed,” she said.

“There are great training opportunities, including leadership development and outdoor skill courses like alpine and bushcraft training.

“It’s a chance to learn new things, meet great people, and make a real impact.”
