East Sunbury and the local football community are wrapping its arms around one of the Thunder players and his family after he suffered a serious medical episode on Anzac Day.
The episode happened in the first quarter of the Essendon District Football League division two reserves game which was then stopped. The game the seniors game to follow were both cancelled.
The Thunder released a statement on Friday night providing an update.
“Today, one of our Reserves players suffered a serious medical episode during the game,” it said. “As a result, all remaining games scheduled for the day were called off out of respect and care for the player, their family, teammates, and all those impacted.
“Right now, our entire club is wrapping its arms around the player’s family and loved ones. The East Sunbury Football Club is offering full support while also giving the family the space they need during this incredibly difficult and uncertain time.
“We understand there are many questions, but we kindly ask for your patience and respect as we focus on supporting the family and prioritising the wellbeing of everyone involved.”
The club said that remainder of this weekend’s fixtures would go ahead.
It said the club is incredibly grateful for the compassion and kind words that have been pouring in.
“We would also like to sincerely thank Rupertswood Football Netball Club for their support, care, and respect shown throughout the incident,” the club said. “Their players, coaching staff, and broader club stood by us with empathy and unity, a true reflection of what community sport is all about.
“Our deepest thanks also go to the paramedics, first responders, and trainers from both clubs who acted swiftly and professionally under immense pressure. Their efforts were nothing short of extraordinary, and we are incredibly grateful for their presence and care on the day.
“In moments like these, the strength and heart of the football community truly shine through. Please continue to keep our player and their loved ones in your thoughts. Your support means more than words can express.”
Earlier the Essendon District Football League said that both matches between Rupertswood and East Sunbury have been abandoned.
Rupertswood in a post said its thoughts are with the East Sunbury Football Club.
