International and interstate tourists are increasingly choosing to visit Victoria, new data shows.

The results of the latest national and international visitor survey conducted by Tourism Research Australia reveal international travellers spent $8.1 billion in Victoria in the year ending June 2024 – up 71 per cent on the same period last year.

Victoria accounted for just over a quarter of all international tourist expenditure in Australia in the year to June, rising to 26 per cent, up four per cent on the previous 12 months.

Domestically, Melbourne remained the travel destination of choice for Australians, with the data showing 3.8 million people traveled to Melbourne for interstate overnight leisure trips, spending $5.3 billion.

Victoria’s major events calendar, including the AFL Grand Final , Australian Open and Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, was a key factor in attracting interstate visitors, while tourists from China and increasingly, India, drove the rise in international travel expenditure.

“Victoria now has the largest share of the Indian tourism market in the country, demonstrating our commitment to showcasing the diversity and vibrancy of our world-class offerings, experiences and events in key international markets,” said Visit Victoria chief executive Brendan McClements.
