Residents are now able to have their say about what to rename one of two reserves called ‘the Village Green’ in Sunbury.

While most residents would be aware of Sunbury Village Green located in the town, there’s also another reserve called the Village Green Reserve on Rolling Meadows Drive.

In May last year, Jacksons Ward councillor Jarrod Bell called for council officers to look into the process of renaming the reserve – now the time has come for residents to weigh in, with submissions open until Friday, March 3.

“We’re required by state legislature to appoint an official name to the reserve on Rolling Meadows Drive, to provide clarity on maps and assist with giving directions, particularly in emergencies when services need to reach an area quickly,” Cr Bell wrote in a Facebook post.

“We want to hear your ideas and name suggestions for this space.

“Here’s your chance to get creative, honour someone special in the community or highlight something you love about Sunbury.”

A report will be presented to council on the results following the first consultation period, and if council endorses the community proposals, the public will again be consulted on their preferred name.

Then, a second report will be presented with the final consultation outcomes for the endorsement of a preferred name. If endorsed, it will be submitted to the Registrar, Geographic Names Victoria for official registration.

Kate Gavin was one of many Sunbury residents who voiced their ideas on social media posts by Cr Bell – she suggested the park be called the First Nations name for Sunbury: Koora Kooracup/Koorakoorakup.

“We should be including Indigenous names in everything we do,” she said.

Other residents commented a range of ideas, many focusing on its place in Rolling Meadows such as ‘Rolling Meadows Reserve’ or ‘Park Green Rolling Meadows’.
