Club Sunbury is back on the winners list for the first time in five rounds in the Bowls Victoria weekend pennant, division 1, section 1, but it wasn’t without a fight.
Dandenong Club pushed Club Sunbury all the way, with the match going down to the final ends.
Despite winning just one rink, Club Sunbury got the overall win, 84 (12)-79 (6).
Club Sunbury’s David Glennon said there was some relief to be back on the winners list.
“They were concerned about the heat and the game was moved to a 10.30am start,” he said.
“It was a great game and a real rollercoaster. It was up and down all day and really close. Club Sunbury managed to pull away towards the end.”
Sebastian Pretty’s rink was the only winner for Club Sunbury winning, 30-14. Marc Bullows and Mark Cowan both suffered one shot losses, 21-20 apiece, while Lee Wesley lost 23-14.
Glennon said Pretty had a really good day along with Danny and Akasha Fortune, who were both in Pretty’s rink.
He said Marc Bullows was again a standout, keeping his rink in it all day.
The win consolidated Club Sunbury in second spot on 138. Lilydale is the runaway leader, 36 points ahead of Club Sunbury.
Just four points separates third down to sixth.
Glennon said with that chasing pack, every result was important in the run home.
“We still sit 18 to 20 points ahead of them,” he said. “We have two very tough games this week.
“Had Club Sunbury lost on the weekend, the closing pack would have closed in on us.
“Anyone can beat anyone.”
Club Sunbury has a double header this weekend.
It faces Bundoora RSL on Saturday and Blackburn on Sunday, with the two sides sitting fourth and fifth respectively.
There’s two rounds left for Club Sunbury’s other sides. Glennon said they could have three or four of those sides make finals.
Meanwhile in the Central Highlands Bowls Division top flight, it was another round with plenty of close matches.
Lancefield snuck home against Gisborne by one shot, winning 58 (14)-57 (2). Trentham won a thriller against Broadford, winning 61 (13)-59 (3).
Romsey claimed all the points against Kilmore, winning 73 (16)-44 (0), while Kyneton Golf won the local derby against Kyneton, 77 (12)-50 (4).
Romsey remains the runaway leader after 11 rounds, sitting 30 points clear of Lancefield.
Gisborne and Kyneton Golf round out the top four.
