Sunbury Softball Association is hoping to grow its numbers again after a tough few years due to the pandemic.
The association, like many other sporting associations, has seen a drop off in numbers with parents and children looking at other things to do.
Association president Karen Wallace they were focused on trying to provide opportunities for as many people as possible to play softball locally.
“After COVID we are still trying to rebuild,” she said. “COVID did a lot of damage.
“We have a women’s competition running and a junior program on Friday nights at the moment.
“We want to extend that to Saturdays and encourage the kids to get out and play. We want to get kids back into being active again.”
Wallace said there were going to have three possibly four teams in their women’s competition this year.
She said they were looking for players to ensure they have four teams and everyone can play every week.
The association has been trying to get a men’s competition back up and running again, for the first time since COVID.
At this stage it was looking unlikely, but if they could get enough men interested they would be happy to run a mini-competition.
“If there’s any parents that want to have a go, we’re happy to have a mini competition,” she said.
“We want families to get involved.”
Wallace said they were hoping to look at other ways to get involved in the next few years.
“We want to get a wheelchair competition up and running,” she said. “We’re fairly diverse and we don’t say no to anyone who wants to play.
“We like to have a hit and giggle and get everyone playing the game. We cater for all ages. We have children as young as four in the juniors and people still playing at 63.”
The women’s season is set to start this weekend.
