Kyneton women start season 2-0

It was mixed results for the Kyneton Tigers as they hit the road in the Basketball Victoria Country Basketball League north-west opening round.

Both the women’s and men’s teams had a tough start to the season facing the Mildura Heat in Mildura on Saturday night and then faced the Swan Hill Flyers n Swan Hill the following day.

The women’s side started their season with two big wins.

On Saturday night against the Heat, the Tigers blew the margin out in the second half.

The Tigers led by just one point at half time, before running away with a 90-67.

Michelle Fletcher was among those to hit the scoreboard early in the game.

They then hit the road again to face the Flyers.

It was a close first half, with the Tigers leading by nine points at the main break. An 18-4 third quarter made sure the Tigers remained in control.

They finished full of run with their highest scoring quarter to win, 75-39.

Adrienne Cameron top scored with 17 points as three players scored double figures.

It was a much tougher weekend for the men’s side who couldn’t come away with a win.

On Saturday night against the Heat, the Tigers lost 101-70.

The Heat won every quarter on the way to the big win. In good signs for the Tigers, they only lost the high scoring last quarter by one point.

Brendan McCartney top scored with 15 points for the Tigers.

The Tigers then backed it up on Sunday against the Flyers. It was one way traffic for much of the match with the Flyers winning 103-56.

McCartney backed up his performance, top scoring again this time with 16 points.

Both Tigers teams have byes this week. This year teams play a condensed season with several matches in short period of time.

The Macedon Ranges Rockies teams both started their seasons with losses.

The men’s side that played finals last season, lost to the Maryborough Blazers, 79-70. Just two points separated the teams at the last break after the Rockies worked their way back into the game in the third quarter.

Jacob Poyser top scored with 24 points.

The women’s team in their first ever match, lost to the Blazers 100-44.

Olivia Ogston and Molly Garrahan top scored with 12 points a piece.

The Rockies face the Bacchus Marsh Lions this Sunday.
