Gardens open to welcome spring

Open Gardens Victoria will unlock the gates to two enchanting Macedon Ranges private gardens on October 1 and 2, to coincide with the Garden Lovers’ Fair.

Lewsham and Durrol, in Macedon and Mt Macedon respectively, will be open to the public as part of the first-time partnership between the beloved local event and Open Gardens Victoria.

The Garden Lovers’ Fair was established by the Mount Macedon and District Horticultural Society in 2003 and is now one of the most popular garden fairs in the state.

Held at Bolobek in Mt Macedon, the fair showcases more than 40 stallholders from across the country, including plants and pots, garden accessories, produce and local food and drinks.

Lovely Lewisham will be bursting with colour as its crabapple trees bloom in pink and red and its purple wisteria fragrant and bright. Ponds and lakes are adorned with stylish bridges, and wide lawns contain hedged garden beds, pergolas, arches and garden art.

Durrol will be another delight, like a step into the past and its grand, old gardens. The owners of the property have had it for more than a century, with six generations of family meandering through its grounds.

Durrol’s head gardener Michael Dale will provide garden talks at 11.30am and 2.30pm on both days.

Shuttle busses will operate from Bolobek carpark to each garden every 30 minutes from 10.30am until 2.30pm, due to limited parking. Garden entry is a separate fee from the fair.
