Severe weather warning

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a severe weather warning that damaging winds of around 90 km/h possible over the Otways and central Victorian ranges and their southern-facing slopes, and northern Melbourne suburbs from early Saturday morning.

According to BOM, winds are expected to ease below warning thresholds from the west during Sunday morning, and throughout by Sunday evening.

In a Facebook post, Gisborne State Emergency Service gave residents advice to:

• Move vehicles under cover or away from trees

• Stay inside and away from windows

• Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony (includes trampolines, outdoor furniture and umbrellas)

• If you are outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.

• If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.

• Keep clear of fallen power-lines

• Stay up to date with warnings from BOM and the VicEmergency App.

“If you see debris on the road or require emergency assistance in floods and storms, please contact the SES on 132 500. For life-threatening situations, please call triple-0,” the post said.

Gisborne SES advised those who were deaf, hard of hearing or had a speech impairment, to contact emergency numbers using the National Relay Service.
