Opals squad named of World Championship practice matches

Sara Blicavs, Maddy Rocci and Ezi Magbegor will be part of the Australian Opals squad that will play practice matches in America in the lead up to the World Cup.

The Opals are ramping up preparations for the World Cup that will be held in Sydney later this year, with a camp and practice matches in New York.

The Aussies will face world number four Canada in the practice matches.

Magbegor, who is from Craigieburn, is one of several WNBA players named in the squad. She had been dominant for the Seattle Storm this season.

Sunbury junior Sara Blicavs and Werribee junior Maddy Rocci have also been named part of the squad.

Included in the squad will be four-time time Olympian and four-time World Championship player Lauren Jackson who impressed at the training camp in Canberra.

Coach Sandy Brondello praised the work Jackson has put in and looks forward to the valuable role she will play in New York.

“Lauren has medalled at every Olympics and three of her World Cup appearances, she knows how to win. Her experience is unprecedented, she has the same hunger for success and will bring an edge to our squad.” Brondello said.

Bec Allen, Darcee Garbin, Cayla George, Tess Madgen, Anneli Maley, Jade Melbourne, Alanna Smith, Steph Talbot, Marianna Tolo, Kristy Wallace and Sami Whitcomb round out the squad.
