Gun softballer Brayden McTigue to play for state

He’s been swinging a bat for only a few years, but Sunbury’s Brayden ‘‘BJ’’ McTigue (pictured) is fast making a name for himself on the softball diamond.

The 15-year-old, who got his start in the local association, has been selected in Softball Victoria’s under-17 side for the national championships in Western Australia next January.

BJ’s mother, Sharon Hall, says it’s been a quick rise through the ranks for the young pitcher, outfielder and third baseman.

‘‘He was playing a lot of football but got quite sick with glandular fever,’’ she said. ‘‘Every time he tried to go back out he would end up sick.’’

BJ tried his hand at softball and found life on the mound very much to his liking.

‘‘He absolutely loves it,’’ Ms Hall said. ‘‘And not only is he passionate about it, it turns out he’s got real talent.’’

Family and friends have been quick to support a crowdfunding campaign to help the Sunbury Downs student pay for his uniforms and the trip to Western Australia.

With $1900 raised in 14 days, they are within reach of a $2500 target.
