Two alleged thieves have been caught by police in a farm dam this morning after dumping a stolen car in Macedon.
Police said the pair were first spotted about 12.50am on Cumberland Road in Pascoe Vale, where the man and woman were noticed in what appeared to be a new black Triton utility – a check of the plates found it was stolen.
After officers attempted to intercept, the ute sped off erratically, and was then followed with assistance of the Airwing through Broadmeadows, the Calder Freeway, into Sunbury and then Macedon, police said.
Police said one of the Broadmeadows van member used stop sticks to stop vehicle in Black Forest Road, where it halted a short time later.
“Police swooped on the area with uniform members, Airwing and Dog Squad closing in on the pair after they ran from the dumped Ute into scrubland,” police said.
“PD Ted along with his handler led officers to a farm dam where the cold, wet and shivering pair were found half submerged trying to get away.
“They were coaxed from the water and arrested without incident.”
Police said bth the 34-year-old man and 25-year-old woman of no fixed address are helping police with their inquiries, and will be interviewed in relation to car theft and dangerous driving while being pursued by police.
Detectives believe the ute was allegedly stolen from an Echuca car yard last week.
According to police, the man was also wanted on a number of other issues, including dangerous driving while being pursued by police and aggravated burglary.
