Sunbury and Macedon Ranges footy wrap

As we head to the pointy end of the season every win is important to seal up finals spots. Here’s a quick look at the local teams and how they went on the weekend.

RDFL

Broadford’s finals hopes have had a hiccup with Riddell ensuring the Kangaroos remain outside the top six for at least another week in the Riddell District Football League. Looking to be the first team to break into the top six since round six, the Kangaroos were left to rue a goalless first quarter. The Bombers led by 24 points at quarter time and were able to maintain a buffer all day. The 12.12 (84) – 10.10 (70) loss means the Kangaroos are again a game and percentage outside the top six.

For the second time this season, Woodend-Hesket won consecutive games holding on against the Melton Centrals, winning 14.10 (94) – 12.7 (79). Finals bound Romsey and Diggers Rest had massive wins over Wallan and Rockbank, while Lancefield, Sunbury Kangaroos and Rupertswood had byes.

Bendigo FL

Kyneton remains in fifth spot on the ladder despite losing to ladder leaders Strathfieldsaye. Under interim coach Luke Beattie for the first time, the Tigers matched the Storm in the first half, before fading to lose 22.20 (152) – 11.3 (69).

Gisborne still sits a game behind the Tigers after losing another close game. The Bulldogs led at half time, but could only kick one goal in the third quarter to give up the lead.  The Bulldogs ended up losing 13.12 (90) – 12.7 (79).

Ballarat FL

The Sunbury Lions suffered their third successive loss in the Ballarat Football League, this time to North Ballarat City. The second quarter proved to be the difference between the two sides, as City kicked six goals to one in the 15.8 (98) – 10.10 (70) win. In good signs for the Lions they outscored City in the second half.

EDFL

It was a disappointing day for East Sunbury as they were comprehensively defeated by Moonee Valley. The Thunder could only kick three goals after quarter time in a performance which showed the difference between the top five teams and the Thunder. The final score was 18.18 (126) – 5.2 (32).

TAC Cup

The Calder Cannons made it three wins in a row as they beat the Bendigo Pioneers, 14.11 (95) – 10.8 (68). After an even first quarter, the Cannons kicked away for an easy win. Karl Brown was best on ground with six goals.
