A group of budding green thumbs took to the soil on Friday for Kyneton Primary School’s tree planting day.
The school’s gardening and sustainability teacher Megan Matthews has been showing the kids how to grow seedlings, collect produce, look after hens and more.
Last year, the environmentally conscious pupils suggested a tree planting day at the school after the June storms, which has now finally taken place despite pandemic delays.
“Sustainability is a big whole school issue and as a school we look to where the school and students can make changes to help the environment,” Ms Matthews said.
With the help of Lyn Rayner from Sunbury Bunnings, plants and trees were donated for the cause on May 20, which was also World Bee Day.
Myla, 9, said she was excited to be taking part in the day because it was good for the earth.
“I think it is really nice that we are planting all these trees for the planet and the oxygen,” Myla said.
Kyneton Primary School only opened a few years ago, and Max, 9, was stoked to contribute to making it a bit greener.
“I feel that it is better with the trees rather than a flat school ground,” Max said.
Ms Matthews said it was “wonderful” to replace any missing trees and “create shade for students in the future”.
