An online parents information session exploring how best to support kids through their emotional and social development is open to Macedon Ranges school communities on Wednesday, March 30.

Paediatrician Dr Billy Garvey will be keynote speaker, with support from clinical psychologist Jennifer Dix and Macedon Primary principal, Matthew Forrest.

“No doubt the last two years have been a challenging time for children and their families. Schools at the cold face are experiencing higher levels of acute mental health needs,” Mr Forrest said.

“Being supported by the mental health reforms coming into Department of Education, we are investigating flexible and adaptable approaches to supporting our student’s wellbeing, with an aim to nurture a healthy and connected community.

“By connecting with experts in mental health, we are aspiring to build capacity across our school’s community to foster an inclusive and safe environment,” he said.

A statement from Macedon Primary said schools in the region had seen a spike in anxiety and an increased need to support families “navigating complex times”.

Dr Garvey said he was always excited to connect with families and work with educators to support kids’ development and wellbeing.

“There is so much we can do to ensure our children thrive and ways to help those who are struggling if we come together as families and professionals in a respectful and meaningful way,” he said.

The event starts at 7pm and it is encouraged participants flag issues in their registration form they would like covered.
