Something very important is happening this year at the Macedon Ranges Autumn Festival.
On the lands of the Traditional Owners – the Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples – Macedon Ranges council will launch its Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), to celebrate and promote First Nations cultures, knowledges, skills and traditions in the region.
The RAP launch will include three special, on-Country events.
Mayor Jennifer Anderson said council plays a key leadership role in the reconciliation, to foster a healing and truth telling that involves everyone in the community.
“I would encourage both those who are able to join in the celebrations on the day, and anyone attending the rest of the Autumn festival to take the opportunity to learn more about reconciliation and improve awareness of Aboriginal history and culture in the context of our beautiful region,” Cr Anderson said.
She said the RAP was an opportunity to “create a shared future”, making sure the Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples’ histories, cultures and rights the properly respected, learned and celebrated.
On Saturday, March 26 at 10am, Dja Dja Wurrung Country will be celebrated at Malmsbury Common in Malmsbury, including a launch of the RAP, an introduction to a new trail network and First Nations signage, a Djaara cultural food and fibre plants tour and a bushfood-inspired morning tea.
Also on the Saturday at 2pm there will be a celebration of Taungurung Country on Bald Hill Reserve, including a smoking ceremony with Taungurung elder Aunty Joanna Joneysett, the RAP launch and a short group walk to celebrate Country – wear sturdy shoes.
On Sunday, March 27 at 11am, Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country will be celebrated at Jacksons Creek Reserve in Gisborne, including the launch of the RAP, a smoking ceremony and Welcome by Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung elder Mandy Nicholson and a performance by a special guest.
All events are free.
“Events such as these are small but important steps, they continue to move us forward for a better future together,” Cr Anderson said.
