Sunbury United remain on top after busy weekend in the McIntyre Cup

Sunbury United remains undefeated on top of the table in the McIntyre Cup after a bumper weekend in the Gisborne & District Cricket Association.

The Bees made it five wins from six outings on Saturday when they chased down Romsey’s 155 in 36 overs.

A mid order partnership between Sammika Perera (61) and Liam Sherlock (50) enabled Sunbury to comfortably manage the total for the loss of four wickets.

Perera also proved handy with the ball, taking 3/39 in nine overs.

Elsewhere the Sunbury Kangaroos proved too strong for cross town rivals East Sunbury.

The Kangaroos posted 142 runs in the first innings, led by Jas King’s 45.

East Sunbury came close to claiming its second win of the year, but ultimately fell short due to some strong fielding from the Kangaroos.

The Kangaroos managed three run outs and held East Sunbury to 124.

Gisborne showed why its an early season contender after a convincing win over Diggers Rest Bulla to put them in fourth place.

The Burras managed a decent total of 7/169 featuring an impressive 47 not out from Jayden Schwarze and a 32 from Rajitha Ratnayake.

But it proved no match for the strength of Gisborne’s top order. Jason Wilson (69 not out) and Patrick McKenna (83 not out) combined at the three and four to blast their side to 2/175.

It was a tough outing for Rupertswood on Saturday, who were knocked over for just 80 runs from 37 overs.

Andrew Pizaro (30) was the one shining light in an otherwise lacklustre batting performance from Rupo, with Ned Crotty (10) the only other player to manage double digits.

Woodend’s opening pair of Marcus Stewart (33 not out) and Harry Lawson (39 not out) made short work of chasing down Rupo’s total without a loss of wicket in 14 overs.

And finally Bacchus Marsh were too strong for Wallan, posting an unassailable 215 before wiping out the Magpies for 113.

The GDCA will return on the weekend of January 8.
