A new shed for Romsey men to gather is a step closer to reality.
Romsey Men’s Shed members have obtained a building permit to begin construction on a new shed at Romsey Park.
Shed secretary Patrick Holt said receiving the building permit had been a long time coming for shed members.
“We have a group of guys who have for about 18 months been trying to get to this point where the shed and the construction of the shed looks like a reality … with the ability to move forward and actually start activities on the ground,” he said.
“It is outstanding.”
Shed members had been using the Romsey Scout Hall as a makeshift meeting place but will soon be able to use the new shed as a place to store materials and equipment and take part in projects.
Site preparation on the new shed started last week and Mr Holt is hoping the shed will be usable by the end of the year.
“We think within two to three weeks we should have the slab down,” he said.
“With all the COVID-19 restrictions, we aren’t sure as to how long it will take to get the shed, but our goal is to have it up and finished before Christmas.”
Mr Holt said men of all ages were welcome to join the Romsey Men’s Shed community.
“It gives men a social gathering point and common point of activity,” he said.
“It gives men the opportunity to give back to the community with projects and it allows men who have life experience to pass that knowledge on to younger generations.”
The state government and McEwen MP Rob Mitchell contributed a combined $80,000 in grant money to assist with the building of the shed.
