Carpark plan still on the move

Hume council has put the call out for tenders from companies interested in completing a design and feasibility study for a multi-level carpark in Sunbury.

The council announced in February that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government’s Department of Transport, with both parties agreeing to contribute to funding the design and development of costs of the project.

Under the agreement, the council is responsible for the design and feasibility investigations for the carpark.

The carpark will provide up to 600 additional parking spots in the town and will be built on the parking lot behind Harris Scarfe on the corner of Station and Evans streets.

It is expected that the new carpark will have accessible parking, secure storage facilities for cyclists and better access for pedestrians.

The long-awaited multi-level carpark has been labelled a “necessity” by Hume’s deputy mayor Jack Medcraft.

“People have been screaming for it,” Cr Medcraft said.

“I would like to see it built as soon as possible. We’ve got it signed off and the next thing is the design work.

“We are going to build it. We have the green light and we can finally do something. It’s full steam ahead.”

The Jacksons Creek Ward councillor previously told Star Weekly that the carpark would help reduce congestion in the town centre.

“What it will do is provide a lot of businesses [and] shopkeepers with a place to park their car,” he said.

“It’ll provide parking for people wanting to shop in Sunbury.

“It’ll free up congestion that a lot of people have been experiencing.”

Tender applications are open until April 30 at 2pm.
