Sunshine for dark days

A Gisborne florist is sending her love to aged care residents through bouquets of flowers.

Scent Florist owner Brooke Vigo is making beautiful bouquets and sending them to residents at Warrina Aged Care and Gisborne Oaks Residential Aged Care.

Ms Vigo is hoping the flowers will bring a smile to residents’ faces during these tough and uncertain times.

“I find that a lot of the older generation really appreciate flowers because they used to grow a lot of their own flowers … they would really value roses and hydrangeas,” she said.

Aged care facilities have restricted visitor policies or are in lockdown as the county battles to control the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The fact that the families aren’t really allowed to see them [residents] – that was my biggest concern for them as well,” Ms Vigo said.

“I just want to let them know that even though they are in there, they are never forgotten.

“I’d hope to just bring happiness and also just make them feel valued as part of the community.”

Ms Vigo has gathered flowers grown in her own garden, sunflowers from Australian growers and floral donations from locals to create the bouquets.

“If I have some [bouquets] left over from the generous donations, I was thinking of donating them to the medical centres across the Macedon area,” she said.

Ms Vigo has been a florist since she was 16-years-old.

“I’ve been given a gift, which I am very lucky,” she said.

“I love how it [flowers] makes people feel better or comforts them in times of need. I also love the fact that it brings back really nice memories for people, like a certain perfume.”

To donate flowers, contact Ms Vigo on 0419 345 489 or info@scentflorist.com.au
