Sunbury back on the winners list

Sunbury returned to the winners’ list with a much needed win against Aberfeldie CBC on Saturday in Bowls Victoria pennant, division 1, section 2.

After three straight losses, Sunbury needed a victory to shore up its top four spot.

On Saturday, it put on an improved performance, winning 87 (16)-50 (2).

Sunbury’s David Glennon said a few changes at the selection table seemed to pay off.

Jimmy Reynolds came back into the side and took over as skip of Mark Cowan’s rink. Cowan moved into Carla Krizanic’s rink, while Marc Bullows went from Krizanic’s to Todd Trewarne’s rink.

“Something had to be done and it worked out really well,” Glennon said.

“We managed to stop the run of losses and now there’s a bit of daylight between us and fourth and fifth.”

Trewarne’s rink won 21-13, Reynolds had a 26-9 win in his skipping debut for the club, while Lee Welsey’s rink had a 25-11 win.

Carla Krizanic’s rink lost 17-15.

Glennon said Reynolds,  Bullows, Welsey, Steve Franke and Sophie Kurzman were the standouts.

Sunbury is now in third spot, 19 points clear of fifth, with two rounds remaining.

Sunbury faces fourth-placed Altona Sports and fifth-placed Werribee in the final two rounds of the season.

Sunbury’s second side secured top spot with a 31-shot win, while their third side will be relegated after another loss.

Of Sunbury’s six teams, five are sitting in the top four.

“At the moment, it’s been a fantastic season so far,” Glennon said.

In the Central Highlands Bowls Division’s top grade, Lancewfield is the first side through to the grand final after beating Kyneton. Kyneton will now face Kyneton Golf in a preliminary final, after beating Gisborne.

In division 2, Diggers Rest beat Kyneton to win through to the grand final. Woodend won the other semi-final and will face Kyneton in the preliminary final.
