Sunbury’s season is on the brink after a third straight loss in Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 2.
Three poor matches have left Sunbury in a fight for a finals spot, after not too long ago looking certain to finish in the top four and aiming for a top two spot.
On Saturday, Sunbury was given a lesson by top two side Glenroy, which won 100 (18)-58 (0).
Sunbury’s David Glennon said Glenroy has had the wood over them in recent years.
“It was an absolute nightmare,” he said. “We were always going to be up against it against Glenroy, but to lose by 42 shots, that’s disappointing.
“That’s two weeks in a row that we’ve lost by pretty similar margins.”
All four rinks suffered losses, with the closest margin being eight shots.
Todd Trewarne lost 28-17, Mark Cowan went down 29-14, Lee Wesley lost 24-16 while Carla Krizanic’s rink fell short 19-11.
Glennon said he could not remember the last time Sunbury’s top side lost three matches in a row and especially two big losses in a row. Sunbury remains in third spot, but the gap to the chasing teams has closed dramatically.
They sit just four points clear of Altona Sports, with Werribee a further shot back. Sunbury plays those two teams in the final two rounds. Before that, they meet Aberfeldie CBC this weekend at home.
Glennon said this weekend’s match was a must-win match if they wanted to play finals.
He said that they needed to get their confidence back and put it together on the green.
“We need to play better bowls,” he said.
“It’s just a confidence thing now. We need to do more training and knuckle down to the task.
“We need to get the win and keep the pressure on.”
It was a mixed day for Sunbury with three of their six sides getting wins.
The second side, which plays in division 3, had a big win and has secured a home final.
Meanwhile, Australian star Krizanic will not be part of Australia’s 2020 World Bowls Championships team. Krizanic will skip this event as she is pregnant with her first child.
The Commonwealth Games gold medalist was part of the women’s triples and fours teams that won gold at the last World Bowls Championships.
In the Central Highlands Bowls Division, rain washed out the final round of the regular season in the top two grades.
It means Lancefield will face Kyneton for a spot in the grand final and Gisborne will play Kyneton Golf in the knockout semi final in division 1.
In division 2, Diggers Rest will face Kyneton for a spot in the grand final, while Macedon and Woodend will play in a knockout semi final.
