Sunbury fails to fire in shock bowls loss

Sunbury put in its worst performance of the Bowls Victoria pennant, division 1, section 2 season on Saturday, suffering an upset loss.

Facing bottom side Whittlesea, Sunbury was confident of returning to the winners list after letting one slip against top side MCC the week before.

But it was a hapless Sunbury, which lost 86 (16)-55 (2) in a massive upset.

Sunbury’s David Glennon said the group was left shocked by the performance.

“We were completely outplayed,” he said.

“We got out-bowled by a better team on the day.

“There were no excuses and it’s not like they stacked their side. No one could put their finger on it, especially at the business end of the season.”

Lee Wesley was the only winning skip for Sunbury, with that rink winning 20-17.

Mark Cowan’s rink lost 19-15, while Todd Trewarne’s rink had a 20-10 loss.

In the biggest shock of the day Carla Krizanic’s rink lost 30-10, with Glennon saying he had never seen a result like that for Krizanic.

Glennon said there weren’t any standouts in the loss. The result all but ends Sunbury’s hopes of a top two finish and home final.

Sunbury sits in third spot on 151 points with Melbourne sitting on top with 193 points and Glenroy second on 185 points.

With a match-up against Glenroy this week, Sunbury will need to turn their form around. A loss and Sunbury will be back in the pack fighting for a finals spot.

“We will be looking over our shoulder,” Glennon said.

“Altona Sports and Werribee aren’t too far behind and we play both sides in the final two rounds.

“There’s a lot of hard work to be done before then and we’ll be back on the training round on Tuesday.”

Sunbury’s second side had a comprehensive 18-0 win against Doutta Galla to all but seal top spot.

It was a mixed day for Sunbury with three of their six sides getting wins.

Five teams sit in the top four at this stage of the season.
