Riddells Creek Primary School pupils are off to see the wizard.
More than 300 pupils are ready to follow the yellow brick road in the school’s 2019 production of The Wizard of Oz.
Production director Nick Gibson said he was looking forward to bringing the family-favourite story to the stage.
“It’s one of the all-time classics,” he said.
“It’s just a favourite for everyone. Over the last few years we’ve done Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Every two years we do a different big show.”
Cast members have dedicated endless hours to rehearsing lines and perfecting dances.
“Students with lead speaking roles have been rehearsing every lunchtime this term and last term,” Mr Gibson said. “Each Friday morning, lead roles have been running through the whole production, so we’ve been doing quite a bit.”
Mr Gibson said the pupils were thrilled to perform the classic tale.
“They’re beside themselves with excitement,” he said. “The energy level just builds. They can see the performance date coming up. You can smell it in the air, it’s so exciting. It’ll be a show like you’ve never seen before.”
The Wizard of Oz will be performed at Gisborne Secondary College’s Barcham Theatre, Melton Road, Gisborne. There will be matinee shows on September 12-13 and evening performances on September 19-22.
