The Sunbury Lions Football Netball Club is doing its bit for road safety.
This season, the Ballarat Football League club has hired buses to transport its players and spectators to and from games in Ballarat.
Club assistant secretary Brian O’Loughlin said it’s about “making sure people are safe and not driving over .05”.
The club plays four games in Ballarat throughout the season – a 100-kilometre round trip for players and spectators.
Buses have been provided for three of the games.
The club has applied for a Towards Zero Community Grant of up to $10,000 to be used to assist with the cost of hiring buses.
“We have a lot of young people at the club,” Mr O’Loughlin said.
“I suppose everyone’s experienced the tragedy of a loss of a life on the road and it’s a devastating thing. If we can do anything to reduce that, then it’s valuable to us.
“The fact that the road toll is on the increase again is an issue for us all. We want to make sure we can do whatever we can. We are a community-based club, we are concerned about our community.”
This weekend marks the Towards Zero round in the Ballarat Football League.
Mr O’Loughin said team captains would wear a zero on their jumpers while playing and the league would use scoreboards to promote the TAC message.
“We’re using social media to promote their messages on Facebook.
“We’re just hoping with all these things, we are making people safer,” he said.
