Global centre nears completion

The long-awaited Hume Global Learning Centre in Sunbury is on track to open later this year.

Hume council communications engagement and advocacy director Sue Haviland said construction on the centre was progressing well.

“The external cladding is nearing completion, which allows work on [the] interior to be the focus,” she said.

“This facility will be a fantastic addition to Sunbury, providing opportunities for life-long learning. We look forward to opening the new Hume Global Learning Centre Sunbury later this year.

A carpark is being constructed which will include 307 spaces. The landscaping of the site will be undertaken once work has been completed and a range of green and hard surfaces are provided.

In December 2017, the council approved the construction contract and work commenced in March last year.

The Hume Global Learning Centre will include a library, business hub, visitor centre, community meeting and learning facilities, access to a range of council services through technology and a customer service centre.

More than $21.5 million has been funded for the project, including $1.1 million funded for the centre in the 2019-20 budget.

Hume mayor Carly Moore said excitement was building for the delivery of the Sunbury project.

“The new Hume Global Learning Centre Sunbury will be a dynamic facility that the Sunbury community has been eagerly awaiting,” she said.

In a statement, the council said the centre would be a “vibrant and welcoming” hub.

“It will be an inspiring place to meet, share, learn, create, collaborate and access information in an ever-changing digital world,” the statement read.

A further report will be provided to council in the lead up to the completion of the project outlining council’s plans for the community opening day including timing and activities.
